{Post: 336/365} I asked my friend for a topic suggestion and he asked what the meaning and importance of a family holiday is. Now, I am thinking about all the occasions over the years that I have shared with my family from childhood forward into my own children. Why do we create holidays that we want most to share with our families and close friends? Putting all religious aspects or origins of each holiday that we do celebrate aside what IS it that keeps us trying year after year (even though many of us have dysfunctional, damaged and fractured families that just don't get along ) to have a family get together, party, celebration or dinner where we all share food, music, gifts and good company. I can only suggest that we all want the same things in life... A place to belong. A family to belong to. Unconditional love. Laughter. Joy. Companionship. Fellowship. HOME. I think as we get older sometimes some of these things get lost in the shuffle of life. When I was a child I remember either/or both Thanksgiving and Christmas at my grandmother's house. Sometimes this would include the whole family of six siblings and each of their spouses and children (uncles, aunts and cousins) ALL either sitting down to dinner or just having a buffet meal together. Sometimes we would also have Easter dinner together. Usually the aunts, my mom and nanny had control of the kitchen and the men in the house would visit in the living room, sometimes playing music, kids running around the house like the chaotic whirlwinds they are! ;) I LOVED the time when they played music and I miss that because it's something that was gone for years even before nanny and grandpa left us. :( But, the years when grandpa played his banjo or the fiddle were the BEST! The aunts and my mom would play guitars too and sing. It is sad when these beautiful aspects of life with a large family get lost because life moves on and it is not always easy to get everyone to the same place at the same time anymore. I think that we strive to have happy holiday moments to CONTINUE as best we can these beautiful, deep, rich, FULL moments of our childhoods and BUILD them anew into our own families. It is why we create traditions and try to continue them on through the years. Maybe so much of life changes that keeping one or two CONSTANT traditions give us the CONTINUITY we need. For ME...FOOD is a big part of the celebration and joy of family. My nanny was a nurturer. Always feeding us. Always baking. Always goodies, home made bread, tea and snacks and good dinners. I think we were spoiled because she was a baker. (I grew up to work in a bakery-it makes me smile inside because I never imagined I would be happy in that kind of job but the truth is it was the BEST one I ever had and I think much if it has to do with it making me feel more connected to her and understanding her better.) She was the sweetest lady I ever knew and I miss her. My mom continues a family tradition of good food, good company and good times on holidays every year even though sometimes it is hard for her and she gets tired of the work. So we have sit down dinners less often now and buffet meals more often but still we can enjoy a few hours of laughter and companionship with each other. I know that when and if the time comes I will need to step up and be the one who continues family holidays if only to give us all a CONSTANT meeting place of home and a space to recharge for life. (Sometimes I do this already when she needs a break lol) I have been making my own Christmas dinner for my friends and family every year since the first one I was out on my own. It is IMPORTANT to me to feed them and spoil them and share a lovely evening together with them because THIS is my way to give them MY home. My way to let them know that they ARE my home. They are everything that IS good and beautiful in it so why would it NOT be important to me to give them all the things that make me ME? I don't need special holidays to do this. None of us really do. EVERY DAY is a good day to appreciate, share, GIVE, LOVE and BE with your loved ones but most of us like holidays because they give us a REASON to set life aside for a little while and MAKE the really important things matter the most! It's the way it always should be but we get lost in the shuffle and busy and speed of our lives and work and lack of real time so a holiday is a good time to TAKE or MAKE the time for each other. So many things get lost over time that I believe it IS very important to do our best to KEEP family holidays and get togethers as a means to CONTINUE lessons and traditions on to our children and their children and so on. I think I'm feeling especially sad this holiday because I miss my daughter who lives on the east coast of Canada now and is VERY far away and my oldest son is also out on his own and doing his own thing. I only have the baby at home with me now and he is getting older so holidays are changing for us again and I want to hold onto the old traditions! I guess it is time to create some NEW ones! Family and holidays mean a LOT to me and I am sad every time something gets lost in the transitions of life but I can keep all the beautiful memories and there will always be NEW ones to create! Here is to you and yours from me and mine. Cherish the moments!
Are YOU aware that you are beautiful?
I know that we all measure and weigh ourselves against the world's and society's standards of what beautiful is and many of us are found wanting on that score.
Are you AWARE that is your own perception of yourself?
Based on what? Whether or not you fit into a the world's sub standard view of what beautiful really is? I mean, we all know a beautiful woman when we see one. The kind that even turns other women's heads and causes envy and jealousy and for the rest of us to feel inferior and that we just don't measure up...if only we were thinner or taller or had blonde hair or pouty lips or long luxurious curly hair or WHATEVER it is about those other women that make us doubt ourselves.
STOP THAT RIGHT NOW!!
YOU are beautiful just as you are!
You need to see all the wonderful, positive things about you as your OWN distinct beauty and love and accept YOURSELF!
When you do this all the love and acceptance and compassion you hold for yourself will shine through you and other people will see you as you truly are!
We are ALL beautiful in our own way and all we have to do is learn to recognize this self when we look at her in the mirror.
Beauty IS in the eye of the beholder but, it is also deeper inside you than can be seen with only a set of eyes so cherish well the people who see and know the truth of YOUR beauty and remind you of it regularly for they are TREASURES but, more importantly LEARN to see your own beauty well and cherish YOURSELF!
acknowledge
realize
appreciate
accept
honour
treasure
value
notice
know
understand
approve
respect
SEE
I would like to suggest standing in front of the mirror and looking into the person you see.
Think of each of these words in this list and ask yourself if you can use all of them to express recognition of the person in the mirror.
Do you see yourself truly?
Do you acknowledge the spirit within?
Do you realize and appreciate who you really are inside?
Do you accept the soul looking out through your eyes?
Do you honour your inner voice?
Do you treasure the gifts and talents that you possess? Are you aware of them?
Do you value yourself? Do you value your own heart and wisdom?
Do you notice a quiet voice of dignity inside you? Do you hear your own voice?
Do you know yourself? Do you know what is underneath the surface?
Do you understand who you are and that what you do or choose is a reflection of deeper fears, vices, beliefs and perceived limitations?
Do you approve of what you see or do you try to change it, squash it, erase it because you think it is not good enough?
DO YOU respect the beautiful creation GOD created when he made you?
Do you SEE your truth? OR do you only see the mask you built and lies you told everyone including yourself to cover up whatever fears, inadequacies and limitations you suffer from?
I suggest you keep looking until you FIND the truth, know and RECOGNIZE the beauty in you and BRING IT TO THE LIGHT!
We are ALL beautiful, intelligent, capable, VIBRANT people with abilities, talents, gifts, ideas, hopes, dreams and beliefs. The sky is NOT the limit...there IS no limit to what we can do.
We only have to SEE, CHOOSE, BELIEVE and then FLY as high as we want to!
Sometimes it is hard to face our own flaws and imperfections and we think that because of them we deserve to be punished or we deserve everything bad that happens to us.
This is FALSE!
EVERYONE has flaws, imperfections, parts they don't like, things they can't change.
It IS ok. Learn to accept yourself as is and change the things you CAN change.
Be open to the POSSIBILITY that everything CAN and does change, that everything has a purpose. Be willing to grow and learn even when you think you can't and when the time for change comes you will be ready to embrace it and move forward. BUT, don't beat yourself up or punish yourself if some things can't be changed because you're not ready or because of circumstances beyond your control. JUST learn to go along with the flow of your life and things will happen as they should. Learn to cherish and believe in the person YOU are!
LEARN to recognize, accept and love yourself JUST AS YOU ARE!!

No person in this life is perfect.
No matter how ANYONE else looks to you they have FLAWS and imperfections just like any of us do. Sometimes it is difficult to see your own, recognize that they are JUST flaws and imperfections and accept yourself as you are. It is GOOD to strive to be better and grow and learn new things and improve upon oneself but, when these faults and flaws become something that you wish to beat yourself over the head with daily then you are NOT accepting yourself.
Everyone makes mistakes. It is how we learn!
I admit, some of us do make doozies! It's really not the end of the world though.
Pick yourself up, correct your mistakes as best you can, apologize for them if they have hurt anyone and move on! Don't hang onto all the negatives...feelings, recriminations, guilt. Don't punish yourself for having had the courage to try something new or different than your normal even if it didn't work out the way you wanted it to!
At least you had the courage to TRY!
So many people never even do that much!
It has taken me a long time to accept myself as I am. To accept the package that I come in, the experiences which have made me who I am, the mistakes and even the successes.
I have spent a long time wallowing in self pity and guilt for many stupid decisions I made in the past...but, that's the thing...it is in the PAST. It is OVER, DONE, can't be changed, can't be taken back, is in large part a huge part of who I am now because of the many things I learned about life, about other people and about myself but, carrying it along with me keeps me stuck in the quagmire of guilt and recriminations. That is SO unnecessary!
Shake it off! Shake off the old and make every day and every new thing NEW and REAL and NOW. Embrace it, be open to it, learn from it, GROW.
Accept yourself as the beautiful, vibrant, capable, intelligent human being that you are.
Accept that sometimes you are less than you could be and just continue striving to be better.
Don't try to be better than everyone else, just try to be a better you than you were yesterday!
EVERY DAY is a NEW day! ;)

I admit I have a hard time with this sometimes.
I have never been a tiny girl and I have never had a "perfect" body and while I'm speaking honestly I will admit, I would almost kill to have the body I was in when I was 15!
Back then, I was FAT to all the girls around me because I am big boned and tall.
I earned the body I live in by inheriting my father's genes and I thank God for that every day because the alternative is my mother's genes being stronger and I'd be a short, round butterball!! At least I AM tall, and also I'm pretty well evenly proportioned so there is that! However, I digress...I have learned through the years, mainly from being just perfect for my age and height and also totally over weight and unhealthy...so basically the whole spectrum of weights and sizes that, I was GOOD when I was 15.
If I'd only liked and accepted myself back then maybe I'd not hate so much the body I'm in now! The thing is that life is a process and a journey and part of it is learning to love yourself the way you are.
I don't like my arms or my stomach.
My arms at one point were bigger around than those of my father. What woman ever wants to admit that? OMG! I don't want to admit it really but nevertheless it IS a fact.
My stomach is hideous. It is just a big mess of stretch marks and flabby excessive skin.
I gave birth to four children. The third one I lost when I was 4 1/2 months pregnant but that was not before the skin had begun to stretch again so I must also count that pregnancy as a factor in the growth or rather non-shrinking of my stomach skin.
Each pregnancy made the stretch marks worse and I had no idea about whether or not it was possible to heal them at the time so I just suffered with the big ugly purple EVIL grooves in my skin. Gross! Now, they have faded almost to the same colour as the rest of my skin but, still I can see them when I stand naked in front of the mirror and I hate them.
They are an ugly horrible part of my body I wish were not there.
So here's the thing. Maybe, only having two parts I really hate out of all the other body parts I have isn't so bad. Maybe if I can manage to teach my brain to respect and honour the fact that the stomach stretched as a result of carrying four beautiful miracles. Never mind the fact that one of them was lost to me the fact is I gave birth to four children and three of them are beautiful, healthy, fascinating, wonderful people.
I earned those stretch marks for a beautiful reason and I should NOT be ashamed of them or insecure about them or even disgusted by them.
I should just recognize and accept that they are the result of a process I endured to carry inside me the most amazing miracles that life could have ever given me!
Thinking of it like this makes me feel better!
As for the arms...well I don't like them and I never will and the only reason they are the way they are is because I DID gain so much weight and all of that was the result of a long, painful, damaging process I went through. Then my health went kaput and I needed new and different medicines and a whole trial and error process to get everything back on track through which I lost about half the weight I had gained. As a result, I have big, ugly, baggy arms because the skin stretched and now hangs.
However, I have been through enough in my life and I decided awhile ago if people have problems with the way I look they can turn their head and look at the wall instead.
I am alive.
I have survived.
I have endured.
I have hurt enough.
This body is really only the package I come in. It is just the shell that houses my mind, heart, and soul. These are the important parts of me.
So, while I admit I don't like the arms and the stomach I have learned to love and accept the rest of me.
The skin that I'm in is good enough for me!
